Greenland’s Election Result Concerns Norway
The election result in Greenland shows a clear desire for independence. As the United States positions itself for access to Arctic mineral resources, Norway should reconsider its own strategic choices.

Demokraatit won
Yesterday, Greenland held a decisive national election. The social-liberal independence party Demokraatit won with 29.9%, followed by the pro-U.S. independence party Naleraq with 24.5%. This outcome shows that Greenland’s citizens have chosen independence from Denmark after decades of dissatisfaction, although any transition will inevitably be a lengthy process.
American interest
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in Greenland and is now closer to gaining access to the island’s mineral resources. The election result could mean that Greenland will enter negotiations with the United States on a mineral agreement that could grant them military security in return. Relevant for Norway
This could be Norway’s opportunity to strengthen its position. The government should begin mineral negotiations without delay; minerals are a powerful bargaining chip that could enhance Norway’s military security. If the government and other parties in the Storting remain as unaware of mineral resources as they have been regarding energy resources, Norway will most likely be swallowed by the EU, and we will indirectly lose control over our minerals—just as we have with the fish processing industry and electricity resources in southern Norway.
