On Challenging Your Own Political Belief System
Most actions people take are guided by belief systems, even if they aren’t always conscious of it. They aren’t limited to religion; they can also be philosophical, political, economic, or scientific in nature. Articles published on S&P is likely to have challenged established belief systems.

Belief systems are interconnected. If religion plays an important role for someone, it will also influence their political belief system. A contemporary example is how former President Trump’s personal belief systems have influenced the world, in some ways more so than Vladimir Putin’s belief systems. Norwegian political parties are also built on belief systems and can develop into belief systems in their own right.
Some individuals are acutely aware of their own beliefs. They acknowledge that these are, in fact, beliefs, remain open to new knowledge, and are willing to adjust their convictions in accordance with changing realities.
Others are less aware of their own belief systems. They often mistake belief for truth and may find it difficult to listen to alternative perspectives. For this group, being challenged can be so uncomfortable that factual information and well-documented knowledge are ignored or rejected in order to preserve existing convictions.
In a recent experiment, this latter group was allowed to express themselves freely in the Society and Society discussion group on Hudd over the past week. Many participants failed to distinguish between fact-based and belief-based statements and presented beliefs as if they were facts. As a result, two comment sections have been closed and group rules have been reinstated. Society and Politics does not serve as a platform for belief systems that spread demonstrably false information.
There is room only for serious debate on Society and Politics, and opinions should be grounded in actual facts and knowledge. Fortunately, most members are aware of their own belief systems and are capable of distinguishing between factual and belief-based statements.
Regardless of the outcome in this year’s parliamentary election, Society and Politics will remain focused on substance rather than opposition. Articles and debates will address concrete issues, real events, and reliable sources, regardless of political party. This is a cross-political forum.
