The majority of the American people are in opposition to the Trump administration, and resistance is also growing among Republicans. Several opinion polls show that opposition among the American population is now approximately 20% greater than support (around 37% in favor, 57% opposed).
The United States is a country in crisis, where authoritarian forces are testing the resiliences of democracy. In the midst of this crisis, Western leaders have chosen to turn their backs on the American people. Even neighboring Canada feels so threatened by the American president that it has entered into a strategic partnership with the dictatorship of China. In Europe, the threats posed by Russia and China are ignored, as leader after leader speaks in grand terms about unity while simultaneously forming a united front against a democracy in crisis. In pure contempt for Donald Trump, judgment has been weakened, resulting in the American population being shut out of the democratic community so warmly proclaimed. This attitude spreads: both editor-controlled and social media overflow with contempt for the United States. A united Western and democratic public is being indoctrinated to believe that the danger is increasing, when the opposite is true—the American population is slowly but surely building the strength needed to resolve the situation within their own country.
At the same time, a political double standard exists. Conservatism is advancing rapidly in Europe as well, to such an extent that social democratic parties are shifting their policies in a conservative direction in order not to lose ground. In Norway, the Labour Party, despite leading the government while having less public support than the conservative Progress Party, has announced that it seeks stricter immigration policies.
The Western world is in the midst of a conservative wave that will not disappear with Trump; to believe otherwise would be naive. Nevertheless, the American people are capable of restoring both democratic administration and democratic dignity, provided they receive support from other democratic countries. They are in a critical situation in which they need democratic support from you and me, the media, political organizations, and not least our national leaders.
Society and Politics calls for standing with the American people in a decisive time in world history!
